I love portraits. The landscape of the face fascinates me. Here is a woman whose only history I know is a photograph, but she lived, grew up, loved and had all the heartaches we all experience. I wonder what her life was like.

Charity Cat 5x7 Watercolor

It's Charity's world and I'm just living in it. When she gets this wild look in her eyes, I know she's going to be in my lap in a second. And it doesn't matter what I have on my lap at the time, even a palatte full of paint won't stop her. Then it's off to the bathtub to wash paint off her paws. She just loves that. I have the scars to prove it.

This is watercolor on bristol board. I couldn't resist the way the camera distorted everything when I took the picture looking straight down on Charity, so I decided to exploit it. There are water bottles and paintings in the room I use as a studio.

I love Lincoln. Not the Lincoln on the penny and the five dollar bill, but Lincoln the human being. In a life time full of suffering, he had the sense of humor to laugh whenever he could, often at himself. When you look up 'life ain't fair' in the dictionary. that's where Lincoln's picture ought to be.

I like these monotone paintings. They remind me of some of the illustrations inside the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines. Sometimes monotone drawings and paintings appeared to illustrate stories in place of full color illustrations. I always thought they held a certain charm.

This is a drawing done with paint. A painted drawing. It is acrylic using only burnt umber and white. The woman was in line at a concession stand at an art festival. I couldn't resist the dress and black shoes.

Imaginary Landscape 12x16 Acrylic

Sitting down at a blank canvas can be very intimadating. If you let it. The hardest part is the first brushstroke. After that, one brushmark flows into another and an image begins to take form, and then you have something that you begin to sculpt and correct as an image emerges. Then it is a cycle of putting in and taking out until you have said what you wanted to say. The hardest part is always getting past your own fear.

This painting is a departure for me. The painting is entirely out of my head. No model and no references used. I am looking for work that is meaningful, personal. The portraits are very meaningful for me, but I am searching for that inner voice I know is there when I look at a blank canvas. I am listening to that still, small voice of intuition that I hear whispering Imagination, Spirituality, Poetry.

She is another on top of my favorite people list. In fact, she is Hallie's sister. I have been painting both of them since they were ankle biters. I like the mood of this painting. A young girl looking out on the waters of the Mississippi River lost in thought over who knows what? Her current situation? Her future? A crisis in her life? I often think when I look at people about what expereinces they have had in their lives that have shaped them, and continue to shape them, into who they are. People are endlessly fascinating to me.
